Emulsion bitumen is a type of liquid bitumen with low viscosity. By spreading bitumen in water and adding emulsifier, ordinary bitumen will turn into a liquid with low viscosity.
Emulsion bitumens have two-phase systems that consist of two immiscible liquids, bitumen and water. The bituminous phase can be dispersed in the aqueous phase by mechanically cutting it in a colloidal mill. Bitumen particles are kept suspended in water by a chemical emulsifier.
